The S&P 500 fell 0.14% to 1,516 in afternoon trading Monday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was off 0.21% to 13,964, while the Nasdaq was down 0.22% to 3,187.
The yield on a 10-year treasury bond was flat at 1.95%.
The price of gold fell 1.03% to $1,650 per ounce.
Shares of Aliso Viejo-based drug maker Avanir Pharmaceuticals Inc. were trading down about 5% to $3 for a market value of $364.5 million. Avanir closed down about 2% on Friday, a day after the company reported a wider-than-expected, first-quarter loss.
Huntington Beach-based action sports apparel and accessories maker Quiksilver Inc. fell back about 2% in afternoon trading Monday to $7 after a 9% rise last week. Quiksilver, which had a recent market value of $1.1 billion, is up about 45% since last month when Bob McKnight stepped down from the chief executive post to remain executive chairman, while Andy Mooney was tapped for the CEO’s job.
