The S&P 500 rose 0.61% to 1,652.79 in afternoon trading Thursday.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.27% to 14,937.90, while the Nasdaq was up 0.87% to 3,631.17.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond rose 1.68% to 2.90%.
The price of gold was up 0.09% to $1,371.30 per ounce.
Costa Mesa-based circuit board maker TTM Technologies Inc. was up about 4% to $10.10 for a market value of $834.63 million.
Anaheim-based circuit board maker Multi-Fineline Electronix Inc. was also up about 2% to $15.52 for a market value of $373.24 million.
Shares of for-profit school operator Corinthian Colleges Inc. continued its rise from Tuesday, up about 3% to $2.51 for a market value of $216.31 million. The company's shares are up nearly 5% from since Tuesday's announcement that it would not have to submit a letter of credit to the U.S. Department of Education. The letter of credit is usually required if a school's composite score falls below a certain threshold for three consecutive years.
