The S&P 500 was down 0.37% to 1,655.16 in afternoon trading Friday.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 0.28% to 15,070.41, while the Nasdaq was up 0.05% to 3,607.91.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond rose 3.48% to 2.85%.
The price of gold was up 0.50% to $1,367.70 per ounce.
Homebuilder stocks rose on Friday, pushed up by new U.S. Department of Commerce data showing an increase in July housing starts, driven by apartment construction.
Newport Beach-based William Lyon Homes was up about 6% to $21.56 for a market value of $677.72 million.
Irvine-based TRI Pointe Homes Inc. rose about 2% to $15.38 for a market value of $485.96 million.
Standard Pacific Corp. of Irvine was up about 1% to $7.70 for a market value of $2.67 billion.
Irvine heart valve maker Edwards Lifesciences Corp. was down about 2% to $69.83 for a market value of $7.86 billion. Medical device companies were generally down on Friday.
