The S&P 500 was up 0.44% to 1,698.36 in afternoon trading Thursday.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.28% to 15,513.29, while the Nasdaq rose 0.53% to 3,673.19.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond was off 0.69% to 2.58%.
The price of gold was up 1.88% to $1,309.50 per ounce.
Investors sent shares of Wet Seal Inc. up about 4% to $4.45 for a market value of $395.90 million. The company said Thursday that same-store sales for the quarter ended Aug. 3 swung to growth and earnings for the quarter are expected to fall in line with previously provided guidance.
Mission Viejo-based The Ensign Group Inc. was off about 3% to $37.42, a day after the company released second-quarter results that missed analyst expectations. Ensign had a recent market value of $817.48 million.
Irvine-based Biolase Inc. shares plunged about 22% to $2.68, a day after reporting second-quarter results that fell below Wall Street estimates. Biolase had a recent market value of $85.06 million.
Shares of Newport Beach-based homebuilder William Lyon Homes were up about 5% to $23.48 after the company reported second-quarter results before market open. William Lyon had a recent market value of $738.14 million.
Irvine-based Western Digital Corp. was up about 4% to $66.35 for a market value of $15.66 billion. Chief rival Seagate Technology Inc. of Cupertino was up about 2% to $41 for a market value of $14.72 billion
