The S&P 500 rose 0.81% to 1,591.55 in afternoon trading Thursday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.57% to 14,760.12, while the Nasdaq was up 0.95% to 3,300.73.

The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond rose 0.88% to 1.71%.

The price of gold was up 2.7% to $1,462 per ounce.


Irvine-based CoreLogic Inc. was up about 13% to $27.80, after reporting better-than-expected first-quarter earnings. CoreLogic had a recent market value of $2.74 billion.


Irvine disk drive maker Western Digital Corp.'s shares were up about 4% to $54.81, a day after the company reported March quarter results that beat analyst expectations. Western Digital had a recent market value of $13.24 billion.


Irvine heart valve maker Edwards Lifesciences Corp. rose about 2% to $65.88 after shares plunged about 20% on Wednesday on the company's lowered full-year outlook and disappointing first-quarter earnings and sales.


Shares of action-sports retailers were up in midday trading.

Irvine-based Tilly's Inc. rose about 8% to $14.74 for a market value of $404.86 million.

Shares of Anaheim-based Pacific Sunwear of California Inc. rose about 6% to $2.70 for a market value of $183.21 million.
