Passenger traffic at John Wayne Airport jumped 6.9% in October from a year ago to 776,658.
The surge was led by Dallas-based Southwest Airlines Co.’s namesake service and AirTran Airways, which recently started flying to Mexico City, Cabo San Lucas, Las Vegas and San Francisco from JWA.
Southwest and AirTran combined for 307,004 passengers last month.
The next busiest carriers were United Airlines (124,545 passengers) and American Airlines (99,895 passengers).
October marked the start of service from JWA to Mexico City and Guadalajara on Mexico-based low-cost carrier Interjet. Service to Mexico through Interjet and AirTran from JWA accounted for 2.5% of the total passenger traffic out of the airport in October.
Air cargo at the airport for the month grew by 30.8% to 1,815 tons.
