Surf City Cops Lead Bank-Scam Investigation

A task force headed by the Huntington Beach Police Department and the U.S. Secret Service is expecting more arrests of suspects tied to a series of bank scams throughout Southern California, which is estimated to have cost about $100 million.

Seven individuals allegedly involved in the scam were arrested last week, and several dozen more are expected to be probed, according to Huntington Beach police Sgt. Dale Shields.

Shields said the suspects likely posed as account holders at hundreds of different banks and got access to victims’ accounts, from which they would take out thousands of dollars.

He said Bank of America has lost $12 million, and talks with other banks are scheduled.

The investigation includes the Irvine Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office. It began several months ago after a scam involving a counterfeit credit card at a Chase Bank in Huntington Beach in December.
