Irvine-based intellectual property law firm Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP is looking to grow in Silicon Valley with a new office.

The office is expected to open in September with a focus on clients in the medical device, biotechnology, high-tech and venture capital industries.

Scott Smith will join the Silicon Valley office as a partner.

Smith holds a medical degree and will concentrate on medical device makers.

He most recently served as vice president of intellectual property and legal affairs at Pulmonx Inc., a maker of medical devices treating pulmonary disorders with offices in Redwood City and Switzerland.

Knobbe Martens has offices in San Diego, Los Angeles, Riverside, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

The firm's Orange County office is by far its largest with 154 attorneys and a client roster that includes Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. and Masimo Corp. in Irvine along with Princeton, N.J.-based Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Inc.
