Managing editor and columnist Gustavo Arellano has been promoted to editor-in-chief of OC Weekly.
Arellano succeeds Ted Kissell, whose resignation becomes effective Friday.
Costa Mesa-based OC Weekly is owned by Phoenix-based Village Voice Media Holdings LLC.
Arellano will continue to write his popular Ask a Mexican column, winner of the 2006 and 2008 Award for Best Column from the Association of Alternative Weeklies. Arellano also will continue reporting on food and restaurants at OC Weekly.
Arellano has been with OC Weekly since 2001, when he began freelancing for the publication. He joined the staff two years later and was named managing editor a year-and-a-half ago.
Kissell informed OC Weekly staffers of his resignation and Arellano’s promotion earlier this week.
Kissell had been with the publication since 2007, and helped the paper expand its website to a daily news provider while overseeing the weekly print edition.
