Engineering and environmental consultant Stantec Consulting Services Inc. named a local businessman as its chairman.

Aram Keith, an Irvine resident, was elevated to the post for the Edmonton, Alberta-based company.

He is expected to remain in Irvine and travel for meetings.

Keith had been serving on the Stantec board since 2005.

Stantec’s Irvine office serves as its Western U.S. hub, employing 97 workers here, according to a Business Journal list published earlier this year.

The company provides planning, engineering, architecture, interior design and other consulting services.

Stantec counts about 11,000 workers companywide in 170 offices.

Keith joined Stantec in 2005 when it bought his Irvine-based The Keith Companies Inc. for $175 million.

Keith co-founded the engineering consulting company in 1983 and served as its chief executive and chairman of the board up until its sale to Stantec.

Stantec took on Keith’s 850 workers and 16 offices in the deal.
