Job Losses Continued in Sept. But Down From Recession Highs

Orange County’s job losses continue to improve from their lows of the recession with 55,800 jobs lost in September from a year earlier.

The unemployment rate here was 9.4% last month, down from a revised 9.8% for August, according to the state Employment Development Department. A year ago, the unemployment rate was 5.7%.

The county saw a 3.8% drop in nonfarm employment in September from a year earlier.

The 55,800 jobs lost is sizable but marks a pullback from the recession’s high of 72,600 annual job losses hit in April.

The retail industry and related sectors drove the yearly job loss last month with 16,900 layoffs, more than half among retailers.

Construction continued its slump with the loss of 10,500 jobs in the past 12 months.

The education and healthcare category added about 1,600 jobs in the past 12 months, with hiring at hospitals offsetting a loss of about 400 education jobs.

The county had 1.4 million employed workers last month, an increase of 5,700 jobs from August. That reversed a loss of 6,200 jobs in August versus July.

The hotel and leisure industry continued to struggle with a monthly job loss of 1,500 jobs.
