Hyundai, Kia Down But Beat Industry With May Sales

Fountain Valley-based Hyundai Motor America and sister company Kia Motor America Inc. of Irvine fared better than most automakers again in May.

Hyundai, part of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co., saw a drop in sales last month versus a year earlier, declining 20%.

Kia, also part of Seoul-based Hyundai, was down 16% from a year earlier.

Hyundai Motor America, the largest automaker with operations here, sold 36,937 vehicles last month.

Kia Motor America sold 26,060 vehicles in May.

Overall U.S. auto sales in May sales tumbled 34% during the month.

Most of the industry leaders were down including Ford Motor Co., down 37%, and Toyota Motor Corp. down 41%.

Still May proved to be the strongest sales month yet for 2009 with most sales better than expected, according to analysts.

Irvine-based Mazda North American Operations saw sales decline 40% to 16,718 vehicles sold in May.

Mazda, part of Japan’s Mazda Motor Corp., said sales were down 33% to date with 86,652 vehicles sold verses 129,370 vehicles sold this time last year.

Cypress-based Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. was down 58% from a year earlier with 4,352 vehicles sold last month.

Even with the steep decline in sales, Mitsubishi, part of Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors Corp., was up 11% from April.

Brea-based American Suzuki Motor Corp. said its May sales declined 75% to 2,585 vehicles from 10,364 vehicles last year.

The automaker, part of Japan? Suzuki Motor Corp. has been hit especially hard by the industrywide auto slump with sales to date down 56% to 20,259 vehicles verses the 46,463 vehicle sold this time last year.
