Hyundai, Kia Down But Beat Industry with June Sales

Fountain Valley-based Hyundai Motor America and sister company Kia Motors America Inc. of Irvine fared better than most automakers again in June as sales fell at a slower pace than in May.

Hyundai, part of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co., saw another drop in sales last month versus a year earlier, declining 24%.

The automaker said the sales were up 3% from May.

Kia, also part of Seoul-based Hyundai, was down 5% from a year earlier, but reported its fourth consecutive month of increased sales with a 3% increase gain from May.

Hyundai Motor America, the largest automaker with operations here, sold 37,943 vehicles last month.

Kia Motor America sold 26,845 vehicles in June and 147,404 for the six months through June.

Overall U.S. auto sales in June sales fell 27% compared to the same month a year ago to 880,000 vehicles.

The declines in sales seemed to have slowed as the last time the U.S. industry’s monthly sales fell less than 30% was September 2008.

June has proved to be the strongest sales month yet for 2009 with most sales better than expected, according to analysts.

Irvine-based Mazda North American Operations saw sales decline 42% to 13,729 vehicles sold in June.

Mazda, part of Japan’s Mazda Motor Corp., said sales were down 35% to date with 100,381 vehicles sold verses 153,141 vehicles sold this time last year.

Cypress-based Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. was down 41% from a year earlier with 4,362 vehicles sold last month.

Even with the steep decline in sales, Mitsubishi, part of Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors Corp., saw its sales fall at a slower pace than in May.

The automaker’s overall sales year to date plunged 58% compared to the same month a year earlier.

Brea-based American Suzuki Motor Corp. said its June sales declined 78% to 2,149 vehicles from 9,784 vehicles last year.

American Suzuki, part of Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corp., has been hit especially hard by the auto slump with sales to date down 60% to 22,408 vehicles verses the 56,247 vehicle sold this time last year.
