Local Aerospace Combo: Brea’s IMS Co. Snags Irvine’s Flight Deck

Brea-based IMS Co., a maker of portable in-flight entertainment players and related software, said Friday it acquired Irvine-based Flight Deck Resources Inc.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Flight Deck is set to be integrated into IMS as a division with the name IMS Flight Deck, the company said.

Flight Deck, which started in 2001, sells what’s known as an electronic flight bag, which is essentially a software package that can handle a slew of tools needed by airplane pilots and crews, including navigational charts, GPS data and aircraft manuals.

It also supports satellite communications and displays weather conditions and airport maps.

A number of Flight Deck executives and employees joined are set to move to IMS’ offices in Brea.

IMS got its start in 1996.

The company counts dozens of commercial airlines, including US Airways, United Airlines, United Airlines and American Airlines, among many other international carriers.

It also sells to aircraft fleet operators, corporate jet managers and aerospace contractors, including Northrop Grumman Corp., Rockwell Collins Inc. and Boeing Co.

Local customers include Irvine’s Lantronix Inc. and Santa Ana’s Iteris Inc.
