Cal State Fullerton Gets $5M For Arts Center

California State University Fullerton received $5 million for its Performing Arts Center from the estate of a former student body president.

Trustees of the Joseph A.W. Clayes III Charitable Trust made the donation to fund scholarships and create programs for the center.

The $48.5 million building, which debuted in 2006, now will be named the Joseph A.W. Clayes III Performing Arts Center.

“This gift provides us with the opportunity to endow scholarships, create programming and develop a presence for the center,” said Cal State Fullerton president Milton Gordon. “We look forward to visiting artists and master classes, among other offerings, to enhance the education of our students.”

Clayes was a member of the first incoming class of CSUF students in the fall of 1959, when classes were held at Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton.

He served on the campus’s first student council and later as associated student body president, according to the university.

Special distinction will be paid to Clayes’ trust and its gift at the Legends & Legacies event on Sept. 27, which recognizes the university’s major donors.
