Biosite Inc., the San Diego maker of medical tests that once was sought by Fullerton’s Beckman Coulter Inc., now officially is part of Inverness Medical Innovations Inc.
Waltham, Mass.-based Inverness said Friday it wrapped up its $1.67 billion buy of Biosite.
Beckman and Inverness publicly vied for Biosite during a six-week period earlier this year and faced off behind the scenes for the past year or so.
Beckman, which had a four-year collaborative relationship with Biosite on heart disease diagnostic tests, started the public bidding with a $1.55 billion offer in late March.
In April, Inverness, a maker of diagnostic devices, came in with a $1.6 billion unsolicited bid for Biosite.
Beckman, a maker of medical testing gear and supplies, eventually matched the Inverness offer after Biosite said it was considering the rival deal.
In May, Inverness upped the ante. Beckman then bowed out, saying a higher offer wouldn’t be in the best interest of its shareholders.
