Allergan: $2M to UCI

The Allergan Foundation on Monday gave $2 million to the University of California, Irvine, to advance eye research and treatment.

The foundation is Irvine-based Allergan Inc.’s philanthropic arm.

Allergan’s donation is going to help UC Irvine conduct clinical eye research, develop programs and technologies, along with others in the industry. It also is set to help “seek clinical solutions to serious and debilitating eye-threatening diseases,” the university said in a statement.

Allergan’s gift will help the university strengthen its position as a “center of excellence” in ophthalmology, said Chancellor Michael Drake.

“This gift underscores Allergan’s longtime commitment to UC Irvine and to the outstanding work it is spearheading to develop new vision-saving treatments and technologies,” said Allergan Chief Executive David E.I. Pyott.

UCI also said that if its proposal to develop an eye institute dedicated to teaching, clinical care and research on retinal disease, is approved and funded, Allergan’s donation would be used to support retinal research there.
