Local Automakers Post Mixed Sales

Local automakers reported mixed U.S. sales for January.

Brea-based American Suzuki Motor Corp. said Tuesday that its U.S. sales rose 15% in January on a gain in both car and truck sales.

The Japanese automaker sold 5,414 vehicles in January, up from 5,099 a year ago.

Car sales rose 15% to 2,549 and truck sales also jumped 15% to 2,865.

The automaker said growth was driven by a 79% jump in sales of its Forenza models and a 35% increase in sales of Suzuki’s XL-7 sport utility vehicle.

Meanwhile, Fountain Valley-based Hyundai Motor America said its January sales jumped 18.7%, citing a surge in sales of its Sonata sedan.

The South Korean automaker sold 26,009 vehicles last month, up from 23,738 a year earlier.

The Tucson sport utility vehicle continued to post strong sales and the Sonata sedan beat out its Elantra to become Hyundai’s best-selling auto. Sonata sales rose 38% to 7,006 autos and Elantra sales rose 27% to 6,653.

Sales declined for both Hyundai’s Santa Fe sport utility vehicle and Tiburon auto.

Mazda North American Operations, the Irvine-based U.S. arm of Japan’s Mazda Motor Corp., reported a slight decline in January U.S. vehicle sales. The automaker cited a moderate rise in truck sales while car demand slumped during the period.

Mazda sold 17,060 vehicles in January, down 0.8% from 18,637 a year ago. Truck sales grew 3.9% to 4,900 thanks in part to its MPV minivan.

Sales of Mazda cars sank 2.6% to 12,160. Improved sales of Mazda3 and Mazda6 autos were offset by declining sales of RX8 sports cars and Miata roadsters, as well as its discontinued Protege line

The biggest decliner was Cypress-based Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc., which reported a 54% drop in total auto sales to 7,269. Part of Mitsubishi’s decline was attributed to a planned cutback in its fleet sales.
