Broadcom Vet Joins San Diego Startup

San Diego-based chip startup Staccato Communications Inc. named former Broadcom Corp. executive Marty Colombatto as chairman.

Colombatto is former vice president and general manager of Irvine-based Broadcom’s networking business unit.

Like Broadcom, Staccato is a fabless chipmaker. It designs wireless chips for electronics, personal computer and mobile phone makers.

Colombatto was one of Broadcom’s earliest workers, joining the chipmaker in 1996 for an eight-year stint. He built Broadcom’s networking business unit from scratch to more than $400 million in annual sales, according to a release.

Prior to Broadcom, Colombatto spent 20 years in engineering, sales, marketing and management roles at Texas Instruments Inc. and Reliance Electric Co., now part of Rockwell Automation Inc.

Staccato was founded in 2002 and has raised $27.5 million in venture funds. Along with tapping Colombatto as chairman, the chip designer named Rick Kornfeld as its new chief executive.

Kornfeld most recently was vice president and general manager of Texas Instruments’ Wireless Center, where he was responsible for the company’s wireless chipset business.

He also worked at Qualcomm Inc. in San Diego for 10 years as vice president of engineering.

Kornfeld replaces Staccato cofounder Roberto Aiello as chief executive. Aiello will be the company’s chief technology officer.
