Survey Says

CAREER CHANGES

Survey by Right Management Consultants of 2,500 out-of-work employees in the U.S. who are receiving services from the consulting firm.

While 56% of out-of-work employees say they are considering a career change, only 40% actually do it,including about a third who switch industries and less than 10% who start their own businesses. More than 44% say they are thinking about self-employment. Fifty-five percent ruled out relocating to find their next job. A quarter consider it a possibility. Age seems to be a factor: 55% of those most interested in changing careers are 56 to 60. Forty-six percent of those least interested in changing careers are 31 to 40, and 48% are upper managers. Fifty-four percent of those most interested in starting their own businesses are 61 or older; 53% are in upper management. Of those least interested in starting their own businesses, 73% are 21 to 30 and 63% are non-managers. Of those most open to relocating for their next jobs, 27% are among the ages of 21 to 30 and 34% are upper-management. Sixty-seven percent of those least open to relocating are non-managers and 69% are aged 61-plus.
