Corinthian Colleges Leads on BusinessWeek List

Six Orange County companies made BusinessWeek’s list of 2002 hot growth companies.

The list, which appears in the June 10 issue, ranks 100 small companies based on three-year growth in sales, earnings and return on investment.

Two returning OC companies climbed higher in the rankings this year, while four newcomers made their debuts.

Huntington Beach-based surfwear maker Quiksilver Inc. and sunglasses maker Oakley Inc. of Foothill Ranch dropped off this year’s list.

Santa Ana-based Corinthian Colleges Inc. moved up 60 places from last year to rank No. 6 on this year’s list,the highest showing of any OC company.

Corinthian saw sales growth of 31.5%, earnings growth of 172% and a return on equity of 19% during the period.

The for-profit technical school operator runs nearly 60 campuses, 17 in California. The company’s major school in California is Bryman College, which offers healthcare degree and diploma programs.

The Keith Cos., a Costa Mesa engineering and consulting services firm, moved up 14 places to No. 19 this year, the third-highest ranking by an OC company.

Keith reinvented itself in 2001, with several acquisitions and new projects.

The newcomers: Aliso Viejo networking gear maker QLogic Corp. (No. 17, the second-highest OC showing); Irvine generic drug maker Sicor Inc. (No. 43); San Clemente medical device maker ICU Medical Inc. (No. 45); and Huntington Beach-based restaurant operator Chicago Pizza and Brewery Inc., which debuted at No. 69.

The companies on the list were selected from a pool of some 10,000 public companies from Standard & Poor’s COMPUSTAT service.

No. 1 on the list?

Coconut Creek, Fla.-based The Singing Machine Co., a distributor of home karaoke machines.
